Most laundry damage is decided before the washer ever fills — at the sorting stage. One red sock in a hot white load, one zipper shredding delicates for forty minutes: sorting is what prevents all of it. Here is the system the pros use, simplified for real life.
The three sorts that cover almost everything
- Whites and very lights — wash warm for everyday soil. This is the load that benefits most from separation; whites pick up dye and grayness from everything else in the drum.
- Darks and saturated colors — wash cold. Cold water keeps dyes in the fabric instead of in the water, so black stays black and navy stays navy.
- Delicates and synthetics — gym clothes, anything with stretch, lace, or a “gentle” label. Cold, gentle, and zipped into their own load away from hooks, zippers, and denim hardware.
Then add one judgment call: heavily soiled work clothes, towels, and bedding deserve their own loads too — they need hotter water and longer cycles than a blouse should endure, and towels shed lint onto everything dark.
The details that separate good from pro
- Zip every zipper. Open zipper teeth are tiny saws.
- Empty every pocket. Tissues announce themselves to the whole load. Pens and lip balm can end a laundry day.
- Turn jeans and printed shirts inside out. Less fading, less abrasion, longer life.
- Treat stains before washing. A stain that survives the wash and goes through the dryer often becomes permanent. Two minutes of pre-treater at home beats regret.
- Don’t overload. Clothes need room to move and rinse. A stuffed drum cleans unevenly no matter how good the machine is.
Why sorting pays off bigger at the Barn
Because our machines are big — four 60 lb and four 40 lb washers, plus plenty of 30 lb and 20 lb — you can run your sorted loads at the same time instead of choosing which sort waits until next week. Whites in one, darks in another, towels in a third: all washing while you have a coffee.
The Laundry Barn is at 1501 N Lynn Riggs Blvd in Claremore, open daily 8:30 AM–8:30 PM — remember, your last drying load must be started by 8:30 PM. Card or coins, attendants on site, and Wi-Fi while you wait. Questions? Call (918) 341-2690.
