A king-size comforter is the final boss of home laundry. Forced into a standard washer, it can’t move, the fill bunches and tears, and the middle never really gets clean. Here’s how to do it right.
Use a machine with room
A comforter needs space to tumble freely — that’s a commercial 40 lb or 60 lb washer, not a home drum. At The Laundry Barn we run both sizes, and they’re the most-used machines in the building for exactly this job.
Wash warm, gentle cycle. Use a moderate amount of detergent (too much leaves residue in thick fill), run an extra rinse if the machine offers it, and check for soap pockets before drying.
Dry it fully, in stages
Comforters dry outside-in. Use a large dryer, stop it every 20–30 minutes, pull the comforter out, shake and reposition it, then restart. Tennis balls or dryer balls help break up clumps. It must be completely dry before it goes back on the bed — trapped moisture means mildew.
Or skip all of it. Comforters are one of the most common wash/dry/fold drop-offs at our counter: hand it over and pick it up clean, fully dry, folded, and bagged. We’re at 1501 N Lynn Riggs Blvd, Claremore, open daily 8:30 AM–8:30 PM. Call (918) 341-2690.
