Drying Bulky Items Right: Rugs, Blankets, and Sleeping Bags

Bulky laundry has one trap: it lies. A blanket can feel dry on the outside while the folded middle is still damp, and a sleeping bag put away “almost dry” smells like a swamp by the next camping trip. Here is how to get big items genuinely dry.

Start with the spin

Dry time is decided in the washer. A commercial washer’s high-speed extraction leaves bulky items far less waterlogged than a home machine does — one reason rugs, blankets, and bedding are worth a trip to The Laundry Barn, where four 60 lb and four 40 lb washers (plus plenty of 30 lb and 20 lb machines) can actually fit them with room to wash and rinse properly.

Dry in stages, and rearrange

  • Use a big dryer and give it space. A packed dryer traps moist air. Bulky items need room to tumble.
  • Stop halfway and rearrange. Pull the item out, shake it, turn it inside-out or refold it so the damp middle becomes the outside. This one step prevents the classic dry-shell, wet-core result.
  • Check by weight and by handful. A fully dry blanket feels light again. Grab a handful from the center and hold it against your cheek — cool means damp.
  • Mind the material. Rubber-backed rugs and anything with foam or glued backing dislike high heat; use medium and patience. Down and synthetic sleeping bags need full loft restored — dry until the insulation puffs evenly, with no cool clumps.

The mildew rule

Never fold, bag, or store a bulky item that is even slightly damp. Mildew needs only a little moisture and a dark closet. If you run out of time, drape the item over chairs at home overnight before it goes into storage — and next time, start earlier in the day.

Plan around our hours

The Laundry Barn is open daily 8:30 AM–8:30 PM, and your last drying load must be started by 8:30 PM (if you’re already inside, you may finish; there’s no re-entry after 8:30 PM). Bulky loads take the longest to dry, so bring them in the morning or early afternoon rather than racing the clock — or drop them with our wash, dry & fold service, same-day and next-day, and let us handle the rearranging.
